Implanon Insertion in Harpley
Harpley Doctors offers Implanon insertion in Harpley, at our clinic in Harpley Town Centre, Werribee. Implanon NXT is a small contraceptive implant placed under the skin of the inner upper arm, and it lasts up to three years. This page explains how it works, what happens at the appointment and what to expect afterwards. You do not need a referral to see a GP for it.
How the contraceptive implant works
Implanon NXT is the only contraceptive implant available in Australia. It releases a hormone that prevents pregnancy for up to three years, and Better Health Channel notes that fertility quickly returns to normal once it is removed. It does not protect against sexually transmitted infections, so a sexual health check is still worth considering.
The appointment
A trained GP numbs a small area of the inner upper arm with a local anaesthetic, then places the implant under the skin. Dr Arezoo Mirzaei performs Implanon insertion and removal at the clinic, and you can ask for her when you book. Your GP talks you through timing, especially if you are changing from another method. It usually takes one short appointment.
Implanon bulk billing
All Implanon procedures are bulk billed.
What to expect afterwards
Your bleeding pattern is likely to change. Healthdirect explains that most people have lighter periods, while some have irregular, more frequent or longer bleeding, especially in the first three months. See your GP if anything worries you, or if you would like the implant removed early.
Other contraception options
Implanon is one choice among several. Your GP can compare it with an IUD and other contraception options, and fit it in with cervical screening or other women’s health care.
To make an appointment, book online or call (03) 8731 1330. We are open seven days, and new patients can fill in the new patient form first.
