Skin Checks and Early Detection

Australia has one of the highest rates of skin cancer in the world, and finding it early makes a real difference. A skin check is a careful examination of your skin from your scalp to your feet. Your GP looks closely at moles, spots and lesions and records anything that needs watching. If something looks suspicious, your GP will talk you through the next steps, which may include a biopsy or referral to a specialist.

Procedures We Offer

  • Full skin checks, including skin checks with photography
  • Skin biopsies under local anaesthetic
  • Skin lesion removal
  • Keloid scar injections
  • Ingrown toenail removal

What Happens at a Skin Check

  • A brief history, covering sun exposure, family history and any moles that have changed
  • A full-body examination with a dermoscope, a magnifying tool with its own light
  • Photographs of any spots that need monitoring
  • A plan, which may be reassurance, a review date, a biopsy or a referral
  • Advice on sun protection and what to watch for between visits

Keloid Scars and Ingrown Toenails

Keloids are raised scars that grow beyond the original wound. Injections into the scar can help flatten it, and more than one treatment is often needed. An ingrown toenail can become painful and infected, and if it keeps coming back, removing part of the nail under local anaesthetic may be recommended.

Check Your Skin Between Visits

Get to know your skin and use the ABCDE guide to check your moles. See your GP if a spot shows any of these:

  • Asymmetry: one half does not match the other
  • Border: an irregular or poorly defined edge
  • Colour: more than one colour, or a change in colour
  • Diameter: larger than about 6 mm
  • Evolving: changing in size, shape or colour, or itching or bleeding

Preparing for Your Appointment

Wear clothing that is easy to remove, and take off nail polish and make-up so your doctor can see your skin clearly. If a mole has changed, bring photos on your phone. No fasting or other preparation is needed.

Protect Your Skin

Use sun protection whenever the UV level is 3 or above: slip on clothing, slop on SPF 50+ sunscreen, slap on a hat, seek shade and slide on sunglasses.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a lesion be removed at the same visit?

If a lesion needs a biopsy or removal, your GP can perform it during the same visit under local anaesthetic. Allow up to 45 minutes for a combined examination and procedure.

How often should I have a skin check?

It depends on your risk. People with fair skin, many moles, a history of sunburn or a family history of skin cancer may need checks more often. Your GP will recommend how often is right for you.

Can I see a female doctor?

Yes. Female GPs practise at Harpley Doctors. Choose your preferred doctor when you book online, or ask reception to help.

Do I need a referral?

No. You can book directly with a GP at Harpley Doctors, online or by calling (03) 8731 1330.
