Plan Your Travel Health Early

It is best to see your GP 6 to 8 weeks before you leave, because some vaccines need more than one dose or time to take effect. Your doctor will ask about your destinations and stopovers, how long you will be away, where you will stay, what you plan to do and your medical history, so the advice fits your trip.

What We Can Help With

  • Checking your routine vaccines, such as tetanus, measles and flu, are up to date
  • Advice on destination vaccines, such as hepatitis A or typhoid, where recommended
  • Yellow fever vaccination, with your International Certificate of Vaccination or Prophylaxis
  • Managing ongoing medical conditions and medicines while you are away
  • Advice on food and water safety and avoiding mosquito bites

Yellow Fever Vaccination

Some countries in Africa and South America require proof of yellow fever vaccination. The vaccine must be given at least 10 days before you enter a country where it is a legal requirement. Harpley Doctors offers the yellow fever vaccine and issues your certificate at the appointment.

Before You Go

  • Check Smartraveller for the latest advice on every country on your itinerary
  • Confirm your travel insurance covers medical treatment
  • Carry enough medicine for the whole trip, in its original labelled packaging, with copies of your prescriptions
  • Pack insect repellent and a basic medical kit, such as pain relief, oral rehydration salts and wound care supplies

Children and Older Travellers

Children may need different vaccines or doses to adults, so bring their immunisation records. Older travellers, and anyone with an ongoing health condition, may benefit from a medication review before a long trip. Some countries restrict certain medicines, so check with your destination’s embassy before you pack them.

After You Return

Some travel-related illnesses appear days or weeks after you get home. See your GP if you develop a fever, ongoing tiredness, stomach upsets or an unusual rash after travelling, and mention where you have been.
