About Some Common Procedures
- Implanon: a small rod placed under the skin of the upper arm that prevents pregnancy for up to three years
- IUD: a hormonal or copper device placed in the uterus for long-term, reversible contraception

What to Expect
Your GP will first talk with you about the procedure, check your medical history and medicines, and explain what is involved. Many minor procedures use a local anaesthetic to numb the area, so you stay awake while the procedure is done. Afterwards, we will explain how to care for the area and whether you need to come back for a check. Contact us if you notice increasing pain, redness, swelling, discharge or a fever, as these can be signs of infection.
Before Your Procedure
- Tell your doctor about any medicines you take, especially blood thinners
- Let us know about any allergies, including to anaesthetics or dressings
- Wear comfortable clothing that gives easy access to the area
When to Go to Hospital
Serious injuries, heavy bleeding that will not stop and major burns need emergency care. In an emergency, call 000.
