Why Pathology Testing Matters

Common Tests

  • Blood tests, such as cholesterol, blood sugar and blood counts
  • Urine tests
  • Tests to monitor ongoing conditions such as diabetes
  • Sexual health tests
  • Blood tests your doctor orders during a check-up

Before Your Test

  • Bring the pathology request form from your doctor
  • Bring your Medicare card
  • Check with your doctor whether you need to fast before your test
  • Check the collection hours above before you visit

Understanding Your Request Form

Your doctor lists the tests you need on a pathology request form. Some tests need you to fast, pause certain medicines or give a sample at a set time, so read any instructions on the form and ask your doctor when in doubt. If you are having several tests, they can often be collected at the same time.

Urine Samples and Feeling Faint

If you need to give a urine sample, the collector will give you a container and instructions. Let the collector know if needles make you feel faint, or if you have fainted before, so you can lie down for your test, and mention any allergy to tape or latex. Unless you have been told otherwise, drinking water beforehand can make blood collection easier.

Getting Your Results

Your results are sent to your doctor. You will usually be notified by text message, and for urgent results we will contact you by phone. Reception and nursing staff cannot give results over the phone, so please book an appointment to discuss them with your doctor. If you have not been notified, please follow up with us, as keeping track of your results is a shared responsibility.

Tests Outside the Practice

Some tests and imaging, such as X-rays, are done outside the practice. We will give you the details to make an appointment. Please ask the provider whether any fees apply, as we cannot guarantee that outside services will bulk bill.
