Care for babies and children

Our GPs provide children’s health assessments, developmental checks and childhood immunisations, and early intervention for children who need extra support. Dr Farzana Yasmin lists child health and childhood nutrition among her interests, and Dr Arezoo Mirzaei has a special interest in paediatrics. See Paediatric Health for more.

Pregnancy and new parents

Our GPs provide antenatal care through pregnancy. The whooping cough vaccine is free in each pregnancy, ideally between 20 and 32 weeks, and the flu vaccine is free at any stage.

Your GP and the Maternal and Child Health nurse

In Victoria, your GP works alongside the Maternal and Child Health (MCH) service, a free service for all Victorian families with children from birth to school age. Your local MCH service is told when your baby is born, and a nurse contacts you in the first 1 to 2 weeks to book the first visit, usually at home. After that, MCH nurses see your child at 10 key ages and stages:

  • the first home visit, then 2 weeks, 4 weeks and 8 weeks
  • 4 months, 8 months and 1 year
  • 18 months, 2 years and 3 and a half years

The Better Health Channel suggests taking your child's green book (My Health, Learning and Development Record) to MCH visits, immunisation appointments and visits to a local doctor, so bring it to your GP appointments too. For parenting questions at any hour, the MCH Line is on 13 22 29, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

Your child's Medicare and immunisation records

Two records follow your child through the early years:

  • Medicare: Services Australia asks parents to enrol a newborn in Medicare as soon as possible, using the Newborn Child Declaration form from the Parent Pack your hospital or midwife gives you. Once enrolled, your baby is added to your Medicare card and to the Australian Immunisation Register.
  • Immunisation history statement: under Victoria's No Jab No Play rules, enrolling in childcare or kindergarten generally requires an immunisation history statement showing your child is up to date for their age. You can download it through your Medicare online account in myGov, or your vaccination provider can print it for you.

If your child is not up to date, book a time to talk it through with one of our GPs. See Childhood Immunisations and Child Health and Developmental Checks.
