Getting ready for an overseas trip

Smartraveller recommends seeing your doctor 6 to 8 weeks before you leave, so there is time to act on their advice. At the appointment:

  • tell the GP where you are going and ask about the health risks there
  • ask which travel vaccines are suggested, and check your regular vaccinations are up to date
  • if children are travelling, check their childhood vaccinations are current
  • if you take regular medicine, plan how you will get it while away; ideally take enough for the whole trip, as some medicines are not available or legal in other countries

Smartraveller also suggests packing a small first aid kit with things like headache tablets, antiseptic lotion, waterproof band-aids, SPF 30 to 50+ sunscreen and insect repellent. For vaccines and travel advice at the clinic, see Travel Medicine.

Sprains and strains from work or sport

For a sprain, strain or joint injury, the Better Health Channel suggests first aid that follows RICER and avoids HARM:

  • Rest the injured area and keep it supported for 48 to 72 hours.
  • Ice it for 20 minutes every two hours for the first 48 to 72 hours.
  • Compress it with a firm elastic bandage that extends above and below the painful spot.
  • Elevate it above the level of the heart.
  • Referral: see a doctor as soon as possible.
  • Avoid heat, alcohol, running and massage, which can increase bleeding and swelling or delay healing.

See your doctor if pain persists after a couple of days, as what seems like a simple sprain can be a broken bone. Call an ambulance for head, face, neck or spine injuries, eye or abdominal injuries, broken bones or a prolonged loss of consciousness. Getting back to sport depends on your doctor's or physiotherapist's assessment.

If the injury happened at work, WorkSafe Victoria says to report it to your employer in writing as soon as possible, and within 30 days. See WorkCover Injuries for how a GP helps with the claim.
