Skin checks

Cancer Council reports that about two in three Australians will be diagnosed with some form of skin cancer before the age of 70. See Skin Check for what it involves.

Minor procedures

Dr Khalida Batool performs minor surgical procedures such as cyst removal, incision and drainage, cryotherapy and suturing, and Dr Reda Aboelsaad has experience removing skin lesions. See Minor Skin Procedures and Small Scale Surgeries.

Checking your own skin between visits

Cancer Council advises getting to know your skin and what is normal for you, because skin cancers rarely hurt and are more often seen than felt. To check properly, undress completely in good light and look over your whole body, including the soles of your feet, between your fingers and toes and under your nails. Use a mirror for your back and scalp, or ask someone to look for you.

Changes worth showing a GP include:

  • a new mole, or a mole that is getting bigger
  • an outline that becomes notched or irregular
  • a spot that changes colour, or has several colours
  • a spot that becomes raised or develops a lump
  • a surface that turns rough, scaly or ulcerated
  • a mole that itches, tingles, bleeds or weeps
  • a spot that looks different from your others

Cancer Council also suggests talking to your doctor about your own level of risk. If you notice any of these changes, book a skin check rather than waiting.

Protecting your skin from UV

Cancer Council recommends sun protection whenever the UV level is 3 or higher. You cannot see or feel UV, so check it for your location on the free SunSmart app or the Bureau of Meteorology website. For the best protection, use all five SunSmart steps together:

  • Slip on clothing that covers as much skin as possible.
  • Slop on SPF 50 or 50+ broad spectrum, water resistant sunscreen 20 minutes before going outside, and reapply every two hours or after swimming or sweating.
  • Slap on a broad brimmed, legionnaire or bucket hat that shades your face, nose, neck and ears.
  • Seek shade.
  • Slide on close fitting wraparound sunglasses.
